What kind of license do you need to Rent an ATV in Mykonos?

As in all of Greece, to rent an ATV in Mykonos you need to have a full car license, so you can’t be on a provisional license.

Your license must be a B, A1, A2 or A if your license is from an EU Country.

For non-EU countries, you will need to bring along your license and an International Driving Permit.

Check the official Greek government website here to see if you need an International Driving Permit.

Since November 2011, Australian licenses have been recognized as equivalent to Greek licenses but for every non-EU country, it is highly recommended that you get an IDP and bring it on the day you collect your ATV.

How Old Do You Have to Be to Rent an ATV

In Mykonos (and all of Greece), you will see on the ATV rental company webpages minimum ages for different size ATVs as, crazily, there are different age limits required by different rental companies.

In general, you must be a minimum of 22 years old to rent smaller ATVs (such as a Kymco MXU 170cc) and a minimum of 25 years to rent larger ATVs (e.g. such as a CForce 450L).

However, a great many rental companies will insist that a driver is a minimum of 26 years old to hire an ATV or Quad bike. Check the particular requirements of the rental company carefully before booking.

In addition to meeting the minimum age requirements, many rental companies require you to have held a full license for 12 months if renting an ATV up to 170cc and for three years if renting a higher-powered ATV.

The takeaway: if you’re under 26, check carefully with the rental company’s website or contact them to confirm their minimum age requirements.

General tips for renting an ATV in Mykonos

As you can see, you need to check the minimum age for renting an ATV at the website of each rental company, the license requirements for the size of the ATV, and the quality of the reviews of the rental companies (which you can see above).

There is also the need for non-EU drivers to carry an International Driving Permit, and I recommend you do this because it’s another funny rule that some rental companies are adamant about.

Here are some other general tips for renting an ATV in Mykonos.

Most people don’t find driving an ATV difficult but you do risk injury or accidents happening if you don’t understand the fundamentals of using this type of vehicle. A new country (especially if you aren’t used to riding on the right side of the road) can be challenging.

A few years I was in Santorini when two newlyweds died when their ATV rolled down a cliffside.

It was heartbreaking, so take safety seriously, corner slowly, drive slowly down steep hillsides, and don’t drink and drive, the legal limit for alcohol consumption before driving is less than in many other countries.

Check that your travel insurance covers you driving an ATV in the event of an accident a good percentage of travel companies don’t cover ATV and UTV driving accidents.

Free parking at your hotel will save you a lot of hassle and being able to have free parking when you go into Chora is also a bonus. Check out the free parking lot at the Old Port.

The Cost of an ATV Rental in Mykonos

There are a few things that determine the cost of any ATV rental in Mykonos.

  • The first of these is when you book your rental – high season or low season. The prices differ
  • The second factor is the power level of your ATV. A 170cc ATV costs much less to rent than a 650cc ATV so consider what you’re going to be doing with it. Mykonos is largely flat so you don’t need the power to get up mountainous roads like you do in Naxos or even hilly Paros.
  • Fuel is part of this consideration as you need to bring your ATV back full or with the same amount of fuel in the tank as when you rented it.

  • And then there is demand. There are 12,500 residents of Mykonos but come summer, they are joined by over a million tourists. It’s no wonder you can never find a taxi and the buses are overflowing. An ATV just makes sense on a small island with too many people for the existing services.
  • Prices can rise as ATVs sell out over the summer months. There may also be minimum rental periods of two or three days during the high season.
  • Finally, there is often an enormous security deposit – it can be around  €800.00 (but this is also the case for many car rentals). So make sure you take your credit card with you when you go to pick-up your ATV rental.

The average rental in Mykonos in low season for the smallest ATV (50cc) starts around €25 per day, rising to €37 per day in high season.

A mid-size ATV such as a 400cc model would cost you a minimum of €53 in low season and at least €70 in high season.

For a 625cc model in low season, expect to pay a minimum of €79 per day, rising to at least €100 per day in high season.

Larger models, quads, and especially ATV buggies, will be more.

These are online rental rates that don’t include 24% tax or the security deposit that will be held on your credit card for the duratin of your rental.

Tips for Finding Good Prices for ATVs

There are a couple of hidden costs that sometimes get added to your ATV rental in Mykonos that you won’t find on other Greek islands like Naxos, Paros, Milos, and Corfu.

ATV hire agency, Mykonos, Greece
ATV hire agency, Mykonos, Greece
  • The first of these is the tax of 24% which is not often added upfront to the rental price.
  • The second of these is an extra charge to transfer you to their office location or to drop off or pick up their ATV.
  • The price for this service is about  €30.00 but it’s included in the rental service costs of some companies on Mykonos and certainly on most other Greek islands where I’ve rented an ATV.

The best tip I can give you is to book early and book online. You can take advantage of:

  • standing discounts for online bookings of around 15%,
  • annual specials like Easter sales, and
  • the largest range of vehicles at all different price points because you’ve not left it to the last minute so you don’t need to hire a large and expensive vehicle if that’s not your preference.
  • If you are booking for 4 or more days, ask for a discount.
  • If you book from a reputable company like those listed above, you minimize your chances of something (expensive) going wrong and you’re more likely to get a good list of free services that are part of the hire cost.
  • And finally, if all this seems too much of a hassle for a short zip around the island, check out this self-guided or fully-guided tour by ATV of Mykonos and see if it will provide you with enough adventure and adrenalin for your Mykonos stay:

Top 8 Places to Visit on Mykonos With an ATV Rental

After you’ve explored Mykonos Chora and Little Venice, it’s time to hop on your ATV and plan your route around the island.

There’s only one beach in this list and that’s the most famous in Mykonos, but you can take the coast road and visit as many of them as you like.

This list includes some of the lesser-known sights for first-timers to explore and discover.

1. The Flour Mills of Mykonos

One of Greece’s most iconic landmarks is the five 16th-century Venetian grain windmills that you’ll find just south of the Old Port and Mykonos Town.

They sit on a ridge above Little Venice and are known as Kato Myloi, or “Lower Windmills.” A perfect lunch and sunset spot.

4. Paradise Beach

Paradise Beach and its neighboring beaches like Super Paradise Beach) are THE reason a million people come to Mykonos each year. It is truly the Greek Ibiza and is the temporary home of global celebrities who pop in and out on their private planes and helicopters.

Even if you have no intention of partying in the sun on a beach to thumping music and some of the world’s best artists and DJs (come on – that sounds pretty good), then walking the beach trail along the nearby beaches is an essential Mykonos thing to do.

5. Monastery of Paleokastro

The lovely 17th Century Monastery of Paleokastro is almost due east of Mykonos Chora and just north of Ano Mera. It’s open to see for a few Euros, as is a small museum.

It sits on the top of a hill and the views, especially at sunset are incredible. If you feel crowded on the beaches and want to savor a quieter sunset, this is a great option.

6. Armenistis Lighthouse

A Mykonos landmark, Armenistis Lighthouse is 10 km north of Chora and is a 20-minute drive. Another great spot for a picnic lunch or to catch a sunset.

Near Ano Mera is a wonderful working dairy farm that is known for its cheeses and yogurts.

I’ve found the cheeses made on the Greek islands vary quite a bit from each other, but there is a lovely smoothness to the Greek yogurt and this is a small lush piece of Mykonos that tourists rarely find out about!

Top 10 FAQs about ATV rental Mykonos

1. Can you ATV around Mykonos?

Thousands of people use an ATV to get around on their holiday in Mykonos each year. A lack of taxis and crowded buses means that outside of Mykonos Town, an ATV is a fun and memorable way to get to beaches, villages, and off-the-beaten-path treasures in the north.

2. Do you need a license to rent an ATV in Mykonos?

As in all of Greece, to rent an ATV in Mykonos you need to have a car license as most ATVs have 4 wheels.  Your license must be a B, A1, A2, or A if your license is from an EU Country.
For non-EU countries, you will need to bring along your license and an International Driving Permit.
Since November 2011, Australian licenses have been recognized as equivalent to Greek licenses but for every non-EU country, it is highly recommended that you get an IDP and bring it on the day you collect your ATV.

3. Can you get around Mykonos without a car?

The main town of Mykonos Chora is car-free so you walk or bike around it. To get to individual beaches you can take a SeaBus service, and to get to villages and beaches, you can usually get a bus.

Cars are difficult to park in Mykonos and so an ATV will allow you to skip out on the enormous crowds queueing for buses, and strike out to explore on your own.
By booking early, you may secure a taxi but the Mykonos taxi fleet is much too small to provide you with a reliable service in high season.

4. How old do you have to be to rent an ATV in Mykonos?

In Mykonos, as in all of Greece, you will see on the ATV rental company webpages minimum ages for different size ATVs as, crazily, there are different age limits required by different rental companies.

In addition to meeting the minimum age requirements, many rental companies require you to have held a full license for 12 months is renting an ATV up to 170cc and for three years if renting a higher-powered ATV.

5. Do you have to wear a helmet on a quad in Greece?

Yes, it’s a basic national safety law.
In Greece, although it’s often not adhered to, the law is that all drivers and passengers must wear a helmet when driving quads, ATVs, scooters, or motorbikes.

6. How long does it take to drive around Mykonos?

40 minutes to cross the island.
With an area of only 85 and a half square meters (33 square miles), Mykonos can be easily driven around from one end to the other in 40 minutes.

It is 10 km (6.2 miles) in length and 15 km wide (9.3 miles) and the longest stretch you’ll drive is the east-to-west road which will take you 40 minutes.

However, if you wish to circumnavigate Mykonos, there simply isn’t a coast road you can take all the way. You will need to backtrack frequently to a major road, before heading to the coast again.

7. Is it easy to drive around Mykonos?

Mykonos is easy to drive around because it is flatter and smaller than many other Greek Islands. Many roads to beaches are unpaved and it is easier for an ATV or UTV to get around these areas than a car.

Parking is also easy, but cars have a very difficult time in summer.

8. How do I choose an ATV?

There are three factors involved in choosing an ATV. The first is to choose a reputable company highly rated for its services.

The second factor is power. If you are on a mountainous Greek island like Naxos, for instance, a 300cc ATV is going to go VERY slowly up the mountain roads, but on flat terrains, a 300cc ATV is perfectly adequate.

Finally, your height is important because up to 178 cm (5’10”), you can fit comfortably and are able to control well a 400cc ATV. However, if you are taller than 178 cm and able to handle a more powerful model, then a 500cc+ ATV will be more comfortable for your frame. Of course, the prices rise as the models become more powerful.

9. How many people can fit on a quad?

A quad can legally take the number of people that it has seats for. Most quads have one or two seats, but some quads are designed for three people.

10. How fast does a normal ATV go?

ATVs are slower than cars and their top speed depends upon the power of the ATVs engine.
The maximum speed of an ATV that is 110cc is around 30 mph (48 km/hr), for cars with a 450cc the maximum speed is about 55mph (89 km/hr), and for the larger 650cc+ models, you can get to about 75mph (121 km/hr).
